Potential Target Audiences

I have researched into different target audiences and have gathered the information below on the different audiences, form the websites provided, both the channels from the BBC had information on their website, however Disney channel did not, the information on Disney Channel is from wikipedia.

The target audience for CBBC is children aged 6-12. At this age their lives are still fairly care-free and innocent. They love to laugh, are very creative and hungry for information that will have playground currency.
That said, they are also at a turning point in their lives: they want a bit more independence, yet still need to feel secure; they are care-free, but school and parents are giving them more responsibility; they are working out their own opinions, but still want to fit in. In short, they are slowly moving from under their parents' wings to be influenced by their peers. But they are not yet striking out on their own. If we could distil all we know about our audience into the key points that we feel matter most to our channel they would be:
  • They are full of contradiction that both excites and daunts them
  • Friends are becoming the centre of their world
  • They are at home with technology and the speed at which it changes
  • They are huge multi-taskers especially at 9 yrs plus
  • They are creative dynamos who are not yet hardwired
94% of our audience live in homes with digital TV and more than 80% of 6-12 year olds go online. Children's expectations of where, when and how they can find content have changed dramatically in just a few years. However, children haven't changed as much as we might think: girls are still girls and boys are still boys.

The Audience:
CBeebies is for both girls and boys aged 0-6 years. This is a diverse and complex audience; 2 & 3 year olds are very different to 5 & 6 year olds.
Their World:
Young children are egocentric. They think about now, not yesterday or tomorrow. They love to laugh and slip effortlessly between fantasy and reality. The key people they share their lives with are their parents and siblings. Our older audience have new found companions at school too. These groups are both play mates as well as being there to make them feel safe and secure. To the under 4s the world is a magical place but between the ages of 4-6 yrs a sense of realism invades their fantasies and begins to root them in the real world. This coincides with them starting primary school and spending more time with other children. That said, their days continue to be filled with new experiences that leave them wide-eyed and excited
Their relationship with media:
At the youngest end children may be happy to passively view television, however, from about 5 years children are highly media literate. Nearly 90% of them live in digital homes and have access to our digital channels. We’ve found children as young as 3 years using the Internet and Interactive Television unaided. They are already playing games online and looking for more sophisticated content - usually comedy driven. Radio is a fantastic medium to stimulate the imagination of this age group. It can be both highly creative and gripping but also calming and relaxing. Not only do Children love to listen to stories but listening as an extremely important skill that has to be learnt. Listening to the spoken word is a great tool in supporting kid's language development too. Radio can be both highly creative and gripping but also calming and relaxing. CBeebies Radio on BBC 7 sits at the more upbeat end of the scale through a variety of programmes, including comedy, stories, songs, quizzes and games. Radio is also an opportunity to bring the TV characters our audience love, to them in totally different situations. Radio is a fantastic medium to stimulate the imagination of this age group.

The channel specializes in television programming for children through original children's television series and movies, as well as third-party programming. It is marketed mostly toward young children, with the exception of their weekend primetime block that is aimed at pre-teens and teenagers ages 9–15. In recent years, the diversity of viewers has increased with an older audience, typically teenagers, young adults and young families.

Target Audience Survey

Below is a questionnaire that I handed out to students at my school and my neighbours. I would have done an online questionnaire but people would have ignored the request and I wouldn't have been able to contact younger students, so a face to face questionnaire seemed the most intelligent option. However I wasn't able to let the Participants view clips on the internet, so as I went round handing out the questionnaire I also let the participants see the clips for questions 5 & 6 on my laptop.
I needed data form my 3 neighbours because they all fell into the ‘up to 6 years’ category, whereas the youngest pupils at my school fall into the ‘Between 6 and 12 years’ category.

This is a general questionnaire and the aim of it was to gather information about other student’s opinions on children’s TV programme openings, in order to know what to include in my opening sequence.

1&2.

I needed to find out the basic information about the people taking part in my questionnaire so the first two questions were simply: 1.What gender are you? and 2.How old are you?

I needed to find out the participants gender's so that I would know if my questionnaire was reliable and generalisable.

I also needed to know the ages of the participants so that I would know what age group to aim my products at, based on the information gathered from this questionnaire.

I found out that I had a similar level of boys and girls complete the questionnaire therefore my results would represent both genders.

I also found out that the majority of people that took part were over 12 years old, this was expected as the majority of people that took part were in the higher end of secondary school, however I did receive date from younger participants as shown.

3.
In order to decide what programme I was to be similar to I needed to find out what channel was most popular with my participants

The findings of this question were that the majority of people watched the CBBC channel. therefore my products will be similar to a show on this channel.

4.
I needed to narrow down what was going to be in my opening sequence so I asked this question to find out what the participants preferred.

The outcome was that people preferred the theme music most about Children's TV programme openings, with the introduction of the characters second and with 'What's happening in the episode' being the least favourite.

These findings have encouraged me to make the theme music noticeable and enjoyable in my opening sequence and perhaps introduce the characters.

5.I asked the participants Which of these animations they preferred after seeing these links:

The results were heavily in favour of the 'Stop Motion Boat' so the children's opening sequence that I'm going to create should follow this theme and style of animation.

6a.
These clips were shown to children aged up to 6 years as they were all from the Cbeebies Channel which has a target audience of up to 6 years.
The results were in favour of Charlie and Lola being 2 against 1 with LazyTown and Teletubbies not being chosen. These results show that if I choose this Target audience to create an opening sequence for then the sequence must be similar to the opening of Charlie and Lola.

6b.
These links were shown to children that fell into the 6-12 years age group. All the shows are from the CBBC Channel which has a target audience of 6-12 years.
Blue peter is clearly the most popular programme from the participants aged 6-12 years and therefore if I am going to create an opening sequence for this target audience it must be similar to it and follow its conventions.

6c.
These links were shown to children aged 9-15 years and are all from The Disney Channel as 9-15 years is the target audience for The Disney Channel.

As The Bell Rings is the most popular show chosen from the participants aged 9-15 years therefore if I am going to create an opening sequence for this target audience I must make it similar and follow its conventions.

The findings form my questionnaire have led me to decide to create a children's opening sequence aimed at the 6-12 year target audience, although the majority of participants in my questionnaire are over 12 the CBBC channel has been chosen as the most popular. Therefore I have chosen the target audience that the CBBC is aimed at.

As I have chose the 6-12 year category I must also chose the most popular show within this age group which is Blue Peter, as this show received significantly more votes then the others.
The participants of my questionnaire chose the ‘Stop Motion Boat’ as the most popular style and theme of animation, this is convenient as the main symbol of Blue Peter is a boat so Blue Peter and the ‘Stop Motion Boat’ can link together easily.
